Taking Away Logan Paul’s Money Won’t Solve YouTube’s Real Problems




Five weeks after his video of a man who committed suicide in a forest in a Japan went viral—or maybe anti-viral—the hugely popular YouTube star, Logan Paul, has finally faced some significant institutional consequences: he’s had a major source of his revenue cut off. That feels like a step in the right direction for YouTube, which is often frustratingly laissez-faire about the junk it hosts, and has long been criticized for failing to hold itself accountable for the platform’s most objectionable content. But that doesn’t mean a broad sweeping overhaul is coming to YouTube; famous creators like Paul are far easier—and more conveniently distracting—targets for public shaming than the people who post the truly insidious stuff.
