Robot Priest Introduced To Do The Honors At Buddhist Funerals

Technology’s invaded many a nook and cranny of modern life, but are we ready for it to handle our funerals? Japanese company Nisseieco Co. Ltd. thinks so. At the most recent funeral expo, the world met “Pepper,” the robot priest designed to chant sutras and cover other duties in light of the decline in paying customers for the services of the human variety. [Michio Inamura, the company’s executive adviser, explained] that a robot would be a cheaper option for families, costing just 50,000 yen ($457) per funeral compared to the typical cost of more than 240,000 yen (£1,711) per funeral for a human priest.
