Diving Into The Mariana Trench To Find World’s Deepest Fish




Plunging to the bottom of the ocean’s deepest crevice is exciting and all, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of interest where animals are concerned, because, as scientist Jeff Drazen noted, “Many studies have rushed to the bottom of the trench, but from an ecological view that is very limiting. It’s like trying to understand a mountain ecosystem by only looking at its summit.” That’s why a team led by two University of Hawaii scientists decided to set their sights a bit higher — between 16,404 and 34,777 feet of the trench’s estimated 36,070-foot depth — to find what was lurking in these rarely-explored areas of the ocean. What they found was a record-breaking community of animals at just over 26,000 feet, which can be seen in the video below:
