A grotto setting isn’t out of place on the stage of an opera, though they’re generally not made of operating room paraphernalia.
That was how Slovenian tenor Ambroz Bajec-Lapajne gave the most dramatic performance of his life, though, as surgeons at the University Medical Center Utrecht removed a large malignant tumor in his brain last year.
In the most dramatic moment of the video (at about the 2:40 mark), Bajec-Lapajne stops singing and appears to be drifting away, but he was able to restart his song from the beginning after a short break.
“I’m just a singer and tenor at that,” Bajec-Lapajne cautioned in a comment attempting to explain his temporary silence, but “I believe he rewired my brain for a while and that was the result. I could not control my tongue anymore and could not stop phonating. It was a very weird feeling.”
A year later, he’s back on the stage and doing fine.
Bravo, Bajec-Lapajne!
