Call us paranoid, but there’s something a bit unnerving about North Korea releasing videos of various missile tests and having it followed by the flexing of U.S. military muscle seemingly in response.
This successful test of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) can be seen as heartening, though it has failed eight of the last seventeen times it was run.
“The intercept of a complex, threat-representative ICBM target is an incredible accomplishment for the GMD system and a critical milestone for this program,” Navy Vice Admiral Jim Syring of the Missile Defense Agency said yesterday in a statement. “This system is vitally important to the defense of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat.”
We’re going to have to join the sentiments of Gizmodo’s Matt Novak, though, and encourage a bit more rigorous diplomatic course to ensure we don’t need to depend on shooting oncoming missiles out of the sky for our safety.
