Like an elegant cruise ship afloat in the clouds, the St. Regis soars above the jumbled streets of Mumbai. While the disconnect between the frenetic free-for-all sprawl at ground level and the exclusive gilded tranquility above can be jarring, this chasm is also part of the pleasure of staying at India’s tallest hotel building. Or so I concluded after a brief visit in January during a stop-over between Sri Lanka and New York. What I also concluded: the St. Regis Mumbai has the best hotel breakfast buffet in the world.
Bleary-eyed and stiff, the result of a late-night slog on Air India from Colombo, I perked up as I stepped out of the elevator and on to the ninth floor. Bombarded with sights and smells from the guilt-inducing indulgences on display in the glossy Seven Kitchens restaurant, I felt like a kid in a candy shop, to use a cliché, except I literally walked past piles of sweets. The first in a series of expansive rooms offered every sugar-laden adult breakfast delight imaginable. From a gelato bar to waffles topped in whipped cream and pancakes with a dozen syrups and toppings; from chocolate and almond (and savory) croissants, to bread pudding spiced with aromatic cinnamon and cardamom; from carrot cake to snack packs of granola, passing through without sampling was an exercise in Olympic-level restraint.
