Before she made her big break as an actress, Tiffany Haddish toured the country for 11 years as a bar mitzvah hype girl.
Her job was to “produce energy” at bar mitzvahs by telling jokes, emceeing and generally getting the party going.
During a visit to The Tonight Show Friday, the Girls Trip star remembered one bar mitzvah that went very wrong.
“There was an older gentleman, he had to be like in his 80s, and I was like, ‘C’mon Grandpa, let’s dance!’” Haddish told Jimmy Fallon. “And then I decided to turn it around on him, drop it like it’s hot … I’m dancing, I’m dancing, he’s smiling and everything … and then I turned around and he was on the ground on his back.”
The man was taken to the hospital and passed away. Haddish was mortified and refused to dance for months after that, but then she received a sweet note from the man’s family.
“I got a letter from the guy’s daughter saying, Thank you so much, that’s the happiest they’d seen him, they hadn’t seen him have so much fun or smile so much in so long.
