One of the things that made the Mission: Impossible series unique up to this point is that each film had a different director who brought their explicit artistic sensibilities to the movie. Mission: Impossible was absolutely a Brian DePalma movie, John Woo’s Mission: Impossible 2 was almost self-parody and so-forth. But this sixth installment is going to be a little different, as Christopher McQuarrie is coming back after Rogue Nation to direct this sixth chapter in the Ethan Hunt saga.
Now, to be fair, the films have become a bit more intertwined as the franchise went on, as you can make the case that J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III, Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation were chapters in a single story arc even if they existed as stand-alone adventures. This film, titled Mission: Impossible Fallout, will allegedly deal with the longterm consequences of Ethan’s choices in and outside of the field. Considering that the series has also become deeply autobiographical, we may see something approaching Vertigo-level self-confessional.
