Our long national nightmare is over! We now have the first bit of footage from Solo: A Star Wars Story! To be honest, I was half-hoping they’d just release the film without a trailer, or at least just drop the first teaser attached to Avengers: Infinity War. Jokes aside, that is as viable a strategy as any since the trailer placement would get gazillions of demo-friendly eyeballs.
However, barring that, if Solo was going to wait a little while, be it due to behind-the-scenes melodrama or merely because they were in the middle of selling The Last Jedi, it did make sense to just wait for the Super Bowl. Tonight’s marketing kick-off made sense since the Super Bowl will be watched by tens-of-millions of people who do not know or care about the behind-the-scenes scandals and are likely to react to a “young Han Solo” movie with a shrug and a “Huh, that looks fun” reaction.
