The experience gain bonus is actually dependent on your friend level. I believe you will need at least a friend level of 2 or higher to get a boost to experienced. I'm not sure if those not on your friend list will increase the friend level. The best way to keep your friend level nice and high though: 1. Friend unit is strong and well equipped. 2. Friend unit is a bonus unit for current king mog event.
