David Harbour's 2018 Super Bowl Commercial For Tide Is So Meta

Stranger Things fans, gather round, because it's time to talk about David Harbour's 2018 Super Bowl commercial. Harbour helped promote Tide and its stain removal capabilities during the big game with an extremely meta ad that spoofed seemingly every Super Bowl commercial trope. The self-aware ad opens with Harbour driving down an empty road in what appears to be a car commercial, before the Stranger Things star points out what you've been thinking. "Yeah, just your typical Super Bowl car ad... right?" he says, before the scene changes, and he's seemingly transplanted into a beer commercial. And an insurance commercial. And a razor commercial. And a diamonds commercial. And so on. But of course, he's not promoting any of those things — what Harbour is really promoting is how clean his clothes are. This is a Tide commercial, remember? The spot is a fun way to showcase Harbour's acting chops, and it's thrilling to watch him go from being the suave guy in a car commercial to the nerdy guy in commercials who sells you insurance. Of course, any Stranger Things fan already knew that Chief Hopper can do it all — but at least the rest of the world can finally witness it, too.
