You'll Shoot Your Eye Out': Fox Scores With 'A Christmas Story Live'

Like the network’s “Grease Live!” last year, Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live” last night almost never stopped moving. The staging was clever and fun and the performances ranged from good to fantastic. The story of Ralphie, a boy in a small 1940s town who only wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, was tweaked to present Matthew Broderick oncamera as older Ralphie looking back at his life. It gave the show an “Our Town” feeling. Maya Rudolph was the emotional heart of the production, giving her harried but loving mother heft in such numbers as “What a Mother Does” and true melancholy in “Just Like That,” about the fleeting nature of time with loved ones.
