Why You Can’t Bring Mercury Thermometers On Planes




Although you probably have never tried to bring a mercury thermometer on a plane, you might be interested to learn that you can’t bring one on, even if you wanted to. Why not? Take a look at the title image of this post. That creepy looking mushroom thing is actually what happens when mercury meets aluminum: they react unceasingly until the mercury evaporates or the aluminum is gone. So if mercury touches the aluminum of the airplane, it will gradually destroy the plane.
