Surfer Plans To Cross The Atlantic On A Stand Up Paddleboard

Now that Chris Bertish has checked off the box marked champion big wave surfer, he’s turned his sights to a challenge that defies imagination: crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a stand up paddleboard. In 2010, the South African surfer won Maverick’s, an event dubbed “the heaviest waves in competition ever.” When asked by Surfline’s Dashel Pierson if it was hard to leave that kind of glory behind, Bertish admitted it was, but that the rewards for making the 4,500-mile transatlantic crossing far outweighed the sentiment.
