One look at this spider is more than enough for most people, but spider photographer Nicky Bay zoomed in to discover a scientific mystery: What’s pulsating under the surface?
The strange movement makes it all the more creepy. Bay reached out to experts to find out what purpose it served and spark investigation into why. Here’s what he found:
Movement to attract prey
Warning for potential predators
Simply the movement of digestive fluids, we’re thinking too much (i.e. no special reason)…
Mimicry of a snake head
Mimicry of a mantis head
Mimicry of a gecko head
Mimicry of other insect larva to attract parasitoids
Whatever the reason, it would be more than enough for most of us to not look at it and say, “Hmmm! Snack time!”
