Every year, Art Basel organizes modern, vibrant art exhibitions in Basel itself, as well as in Miami Beach and Hong Kong. On the east coast of the US, the nocturnal sea and sandy beach formed the stage for "Franchise Freedom", a choreographed drone drama of decentralized algorithms on an unprecedented scale. The model for the mobile airspace sculpture was the bird flight of the starlings. The project, a collaboration between Studio Drift and BMW, is based on ongoing university research to better understand the self-organization of natural life.
The simulated flight patterns were software-implanted into 300 drones to mimic a flock of birds. The open-air installation sees itself as an interface between technology, science and art. The spectacle was captured in a series of four films that are due for release by the end of the year. The first is already online thanks to Future / Pace , a collaboration between Pace Gallery and Future City's cultural strategists.
