
Watching older movies functions really well as a near time machine that transports the audience to a time and place that’s not only uniquely different and culturally telling of that era, but it shines a bright spotlight on our present. Cinema serves this function in a way that no other medium can.
E.T. stars several actors who are no longer famous or recognizable to modern audiences. And it’s great. Not knowing the personal details of the actors gives the viewer a real sense of discovery when watching the movie and forces the performance of the actors and director to be able to stand on their own integrity.
