Never underestimate the foolishness of the human animal.
Case in point? When Coyote Peterson offers up his arm to the dreaded tarantula hawk, a wasp that packs the second worst sting in the insect kingdom and also happens to be the state insect of New Mexico.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, here’s what it does with its victim:
A quarter inch long, the female’s stinger is vital to the process of making more tarantula hawks. The sting itself—which is one of the few to rank as a 4 on the Schmidt sting pain index—is used to paralyze an unsuspecting tarantula so that an egg can be laid inside its body. As it grows it eats away the spider’s organs until bursting out Alien-style to begin the process anew.
FYI, he’s working his way up to experiencing the absolute worst sting of all.
