One or two secret compartments is a pretty cool thing to have in any piece of furniture, yet imagine having so many, there’s an excellent chance of forgetting about one or two and losing those secrets forever?
That’s a distinct possibility in this elaborate writing cabinet built in the 18th century for King Frederick William II of Prussia, the finest piece produced by the workshop of Abraham and David Roentgen. Heck, he probably needed attendants just to remember how to open all the compartments.
The next time you hear someone say “They don’t make’em like they used to,” this is what should come to mind.
