Incredibly Rare Footage Of Blue Whales Feeding On Krill

Before the advent of drone technology, it was tough for scientists to get a good look at creatures as enormous as the blue whale feeding. Even now, footage like this is a treasure. Oregon State University explains how this 200-ton creature makes a careful choice on which krill is worth the enormous amount of energy it must expend to eat it. “It’s equivalent to if you could shove your hand into your mouth and under the skin right down to your belly button,” Robert Shadwick, a zoologist from the University of British Colombia, told the BBC when describing how the creature feeds. “A sort of pouch under the skin, which balloons out enormously — almost into a spherical bubble.” Now that’s opening wide.
