Here’s a municipal issue most towns don’t plan for, but it’s a whale of a problem for the small community of Trout River, Newfoundland: a dead blue whale gaining steam, so to speak, with no way of knowing when that baby’s going to blow.
Though experts think it’s more likely the enormous corpse will slowly deflate, it could take just one dummy with dreams of YouTube stardom and a knife to bring a violent end to this tale.
“If that whale does explode, we don’t know what danger that would be to our infrastructure … or to people,” Trout River’s town clerk, Emily Butler, tells The Telegram. Butler says the whale “looks as if it’s a big balloon, from a distance.”
One thing’s for sure, though; whatever tourism they lose to the smell is sure to be made up for by the suspense and the sight of the largest living animal lying on the beach. Anyone set up a nose-plug booth on the beach yet?
