Predators such as the owl don’t often put themselves in positions as vulnerable as this one, but chances are, this young owl is swimming as a last resort.
The great horned owl was discovered in a canyon of Lake Powell by hikers. It’s thought the young bird fell out of its nest on one of the ledges, and its only option was to swim for safety.
Owls have no defenses when swimming and can only fly once their feathers dry.
