Hairy Rhino Heads Home To Save His Species

Talk about the potential for performance anxiety… Harapan, the only Sumatran rhino left in the U.S. is heading to Indonesia to join another of his kind, Andalas, with the hope they’ll successfully breed. There are only thought to be 100 left on the planet. These Ice Age remnants have disappeared from their native forests in Malaysia and were both bred in the Cincinnati Zoo. Harapan’s sister recently passed away, as did his mother, from a disease known as hemochromatosis. A signal of the desperation conservationists are facing is that it was hoped he would mate with his sister, though it wasn’t meant to be. Let’s hope he gets lucky on his trip abroad.
