Just because we don’t understand cattle calls in their most pure sense doesn’t mean they don’t hold meaning, and a study recently published in Applied Animal Behavior Science show us what most of us have been missing this whole time.
The primary focus of the study performed by Dr. Mónica Padilla de la Torre shows that each mother and calf pair have their own distinct call. Much like human mothers and children, there’s a low-frequency call from Mom when little one is near and much louder one when they’ve strayed a little too far.
No human mother will be surprised that the one kind of call observed in the calves was loud and demanding.
Now, if we could only figure out how those mother cows stay so mellow, we’d be getting somewhere.
