We can easily understand tears over a spilled cup of coffee (especially when that sucker sets you back four bucks), yet leave it to an artist to turn an accident into something extraordinary.
Cake designer Maria A. Aristidou had the misfortune to spill her coffee on a project she was working on, but rather than tossing it, she started to explore the possibilities of using coffee as a medium.
Over time, Aristidou has learned which coffee brands produce certain shades, so she might use three different brands in one painting. “Each brew has its own (qualities), and I choose accordingly to what shade, mark, splatter I need to achieve,” she says. “That may be an americano, an espresso. But my favorite is Greek coffee, in terms of taste, quality, and the effect it gives out.”
