Officer Michael Hance danced his way into the hearts of many members of the LGBTQ community when he got into the swing of things at the 2015 Manhattan Pride parade and achieved YouTube stardom.
Sadly, it was Hance’s work on another line that likely cost him his life, the bucket brigade on 9/11 at the World Trade Center. Last November, Hance fell after reportedly feeling dizzy and was diagnosed with brain cancer that quickly spread throughout his body.
Paige Ponzeka, who recorded the viral moment, remembered:
“That was the best part … that he was straight and was still having fun at the parade,” she said. “That was a great message to send. A lot of cops have a tough-guy vibe, but he had the vibe that you can have fun and there was nothing wrong with that.”
Gay Officers Action League Inc. of NY is holding a fundraiser to benefit his two young daughters.
