Back in the 1880s, the giant sequoia known as Pioneer Cabin Tree was hollowed out to lure tourists away from Yosemite’s similar sights, and that fatal move has finally caught up to the giant.
A recent storm spelled the end of the enormous tree, which was possibly over a thousand years old. Volunteers at Calaveras Big Trees State Park in California noted before the incident that there was only one branch left alive at the top, and the hole had rendered the tree vulnerable to fire and lifting. Sadly, it has come to pass.
