Hear that ticking? It could be a biological clock of sorts, if it’s the biology of humanity as a whole rather than of any one individual.
The incomparable Stephen Hawking said it’s of the utmost importance for humans to continue reaching toward space, since that’s where our future lies.
In a recent speech he gave at Oxford University, he noted that:
“I don’t think we’ll survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.
“Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 to 10,000 years,” Hawking said, according to the Christian Science Monitor. “By that time, we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.”
Always good to secure a Plan B or, in this case, a Planet B.
