When ranking the sexiness of professions, geologist doesn’t come in anywhere near the top — until things start heating up.
Gerry Hayes recently took students to Hawaii’s Kilauea, a shield volcano that’s been continuously erupting since 1983. Halemaʻumaʻu, a crater that’s part of Kilauea, is said to be the current residence of the island’s volcano goddess, Pele, which would be enough to peak any student’s interest. The danger of their backstage tour, so to speak, only made things even more intriguing.
In 2008, the lava pit in Halemaʻumaʻu exploded and tossed foot-wide boulders at this overlook, and since then noxious and poisonous gases have made this spot dangerous. The frozen lava in the main crater dates to the 1920s when a molten lake of lava filled the crater floor. The gifts left at the crater rim show that many take the existence of the volcano goddess Pele quite seriously.
Better yet, though, the goddess was getting lively.
