What did music sound like in 1400 BCE?
An ancient fragment discovered in Syria in the 1950s gives us a clue. The piece was interpreted by Dr. Richard Dumbrill and performed on the lyre by Michael Levy so we can get a taste of the leisure time of the ancients.
The Hurrian songs are a collection of music inscribed in cuneiform on clay tablets excavated from the ancient Amorite[2][3]–Canaanite[4] city of Ugarit which date to approximately 1400 BC. One of these tablets, which is nearly complete, contains the Hurrian hymn to Nikkal (also known as the Hurrian cult hymn or A Zaluzi to the Gods, or simplyh.6), making it the oldest surviving substantially complete work ofnotated music in the world.
