The Caribbean basin is letting out a mighty roar, one loud enough to be heard in space, yet too low to be detected by human hearing.
And it’s roaring in A flat.
Dubbed the Rossby whistle, it’s thought the sound is produced when “planetary waves” hit the unique geography of the Caribbean Sea.
As sea level science expert Chris Hughes of The University of Liverpool explained at Huffington Post:
“When you blow into a whistle, the jet of air becomes unstable and excites the resonant sound wave which fits into the whistle cavity,” he said. “Because the whistle is open, the sound radiates out so you can hear it.”
Like the whistle, the Caribbean Sea is partly open, which allows it to exchange water with the ocean every 120 days, producing a “whistle” so loud it can be picked up from space in the form of oscillations of the Earth’s gravity field.
Of course, the intention is clear: sexual harassment of the Gulf of Mexico. The nerve.
