All those years (days) of affection shown to one’s fish might not have been such a waste of time after all.
At least one species of fish, the archer fish, recognizes human faces according a recent study published at Scientific Reports.
As noted at Huffington Post:
“Being able to distinguish between a large number of human faces is a surprisingly difficult task, mainly due to the fact that all human faces share the same basic features,” Cait Newport of Oxford University said in a statement. “All faces have two eyes above a nose and mouth, therefore to tell people apart we must be able to identify subtle differences in their features.”
Though it doesn’t sound impressive to our huge human brains, this ability was only attributed to humans and other primates until recently. Birds and, now, fish, have also been added to the list.
Who knows if your goldfish recognizes the castle, but it might hold a place in its wee heart for you.
