30,000 fish in the sea, so to speak, and only one has been found with fins quite like this little blind, cave-dweller from Thailand. Living in and around waterfalls with strong flow can present a challenge to such a small animal, but not if it’s developed an adaptation we usually only think of from those long ago days when animals life emerged from the oceans. Cryptotora thamicola has a unique fin and pelvic structure allowing it to cling to and climb walls. As part of the research team from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Brooke E. Flammang, explained: “It possesses morphological features that have previously only been attributed to tetrapods. The pelvis and vertebral column of this fish allow it to support its body weight against gravity and provide large sites for muscle attachment for walking.” Sight might seem like a huge sacrifice in the evolutionary department, but not when you get the pride of being as exceptional as this fish.
