On Jan. 28, 1986, seven astronauts, including one school teacher named Christa McAuliffe. McAuliffe and her crew mates never made it to space, sadly, because just over a minute into their takeoff the shuttle exploded. Everyone on board died. This New York Times piece does a deep dive into the Challenge disaster, explaining the history of the space program and what made the Challenger different from its predecessors and how the structural problems that caused the crash slipped through the cracks.
