There probably aren’t many people out there who know what a radiator duster looks like, but if you do, imagine a creature that looks like that brush attached to all the dust that comes out of said radiator, and you get a pretty good description of the remarkable beast caught on a remotely operated vehicle piloted by the Nautilus Live expedition.
Except that it’s purple…and not one creature, but thousands working together as part of a roving colony.
Deep Sea News writer R.R. Helm, who sees plenty of underwater wonders was intrigued by the footage of what is thought to be a siphonophore:
“To me, the best part of science is stuff like this: seeing something that completely takes my breath away. Even after studying animals like this for the last five years, this video has me in awe. The animal captured in this footage, simply put, is stunning.”
